Twitter vs LinkedIn : The showdown nobody wanted

Welcome to the 12 new people who have joined Aha! Moments. We are now a chotu sa community of 89 peeps 😎
I am thinking to call this community Aha! Square?
This 🤏 close to 100. Share on Twitter?
This week’s issue is going to be about the never-ending topic of what platform is really better for GenZ? Twitter or LinkedIn? Who is really the winner here? Let’s dive in :)
It’s a long one. Get some coffee.
Twitter vs LinkedIn
This is for GenZ
Just for clarification, GenZ are the folks who are currently <24. There isn’t really any particular date since the data is different on all websites. GenZ are the ones who are just starting out in their career and are the fresh ones looking towards building a bright future.
We, being the citizens of the internet, perceive the world differently than most other people. We are literally growing up with the internet at our fingertips which was considered a luxury a few years back in our country.
We are growing up with the insights of James Clear, Ankur Warikoo, Naval Ravikant, Peter Thiel at our fingertips. We are truly the blessed ones.
Networking for GenZ
Just like sound isn’t music. Sending connection requests isn’t networking. (inspired from Jason Fried)
We are growing up in the age of Social media. Some people have more distribution than media companies. This is actually kinda insane if you think about it (more on this later).
We know reaching out to someone isn’t that difficult. The art of cold e-mailing is as good as Brahmashtra in this age.
But what really is networking?
Google baba says this: The action or process of interacting with others to exchange information and develop professional or social contacts.
So that clearly means sending connection requests isn’t networking.
So how does someone make sure if we are someone worthy of being approached?
PoW and PoP
PoW stands for Proof of Work. PoP stands for Proof of Presence.
Now, these are the 2 aspects one usually looks for at the first glance while contacting someone.
For those who aren’t familiar with what PoW means: PoW is applying your knowledge and producing something that shows your proficiency in the skill.
PoP is something I randomly came up with it.
Here is the definition: Proof of Presence is the certificate/degree you get. Does it signify your expertise in the subject? Not really. But it does tell the other person that you were present when the subject was taught.
The Showdown
Twitter glorifies PoW while LinkedIn glorifies PoP.
Career promotions. Course completions. Stuff like this is usually celebrated on LinkedIn. …and it does get a lot of attention.
People who are aware of this PoP and PoW concept hate LinkedIn. They know that PoP tells nothing about the other person. Recruiters want to see your projects. Some don’t really care about what degree you’ve got.
As long as you can do the job. You are welcome.
The thing about LinkedIn
LinkedIn is a much more professional platform. Yes, it’s still a great networking place. You can find most people there and meet some crazy awesome people. But it still isn’t a place to truly connect with one another.
You see, everyone acts very professionally here. It’s sort of justified since all of us here are looking for better opportunities and are trying to expand our Luck surface area.
People will still look at your LinkedIn profile before hiring you.
This is where Twitter comes in
Twitter is a place to share ideas. People who post motivational quotes on LinkedIn, share memes on Twitter. So which one really tells more about them?
Clearly, Twitter seems like a better place. It shows what the person actually thinks. It shows the nitty-gritty details of his/her life. It shows what the person goes through. It lets you form a much more intimate connection with each other.
So…Who is the Loser?
Well…the loser is YOU if you are comparing the two.
Let me explain. The 2 platforms are meant to be used differently. Does this mean PoP isn’t important? It is important. Comparing both is a Zero-sum game.
As a GenZ, you need to find the right balance between PoP and PoW.
Takeaway
Use both of them with each other instead of using them separately. Form connections on Twitter. Connect with them on LinkedIn. Repurpose the content that you produce and publish it on both platforms.
Share your wins. Share your losses. Make genuine connections.
Create opportunities instead of waiting for them.
oof..this was a long one. Time to hydrate. Take this 🍹.

Note: These are my views as of 16th August 2021. They can change with new information. I am not trying to demean any platform. Both have their pros and cons.
Have a banger week ahead.
Rooting for you ❤️
