Typing insanely fast + other insights

Welcome to the first edition of Aha! Moments.
I am humbled by the response to my launch. 49 people have subbed even without reading the first edition. I will definitely not disappoint you :)
Special thanks to Kshitij and Mitesh for encouraging me to pick this up.
In the first edition of the newsletter, we will talk about touch-typing and I’ll share some actionable tips to instantly up your game.
Touch-typing: A superpower
It’s the ability to be able to type with all 10 fingers without looking at the keyboard.
Learning how to type is probably the easiest way to step out of your comfort zone and learn something new.
I want you to take a quick typing test by clicking here.
Once you have done that, you will likely be in any of the below 3 categories:
<50wpm - Beginner
50-70wpm - Intermediate
70+wpm - Advanced
Now let’s dive into what you can do to improve your speed.

Beginners
Touch typing is all about muscle memory. Just like any other muscle, this can be trained by repeatedly exposing it to strain.
The more you practice, the better you become at it. The most important part is to master your finger placement at this stage.
Let’s look at how you can improve it.
Actionable tips:
Go to Keybr and place your fingers as shown in the image. Start typing the random letters it throws at you.
It’s going to be extremely boring and uncomfortable. But keep going.
Do this until you unlock all the letters and achieve a speed of 50-60wpm.
Once you have unlocked all the letters, you have most likely semi-mastered the muscle memory.
But here’s the catch, your actual speed isn’t 50-60 wpm. It will be 25-30wpm.
This is because Keybr’s mechanism is a bit broken. The wpm are based on what you type in 10-15secs and not a whole minute.
Your fingers will hurt. But keep practicing here. You will eventually level up to the 2nd category.

This is my keybr profile :)
Intermediate
If you’ve made it till here, here have some 🍹
If you are at this stage, then it’s pretty evident what you need to do.
Practice. Practice. Practice.
You need to take up minute-based challenges now. Use this website: Monkeytype
Keep hustling until you hit 60-80wpm on minute challenges.
Take up competitive typing now. Use this website: Nitrotype
Now your average speed should be around 60-80wpm. Let’s advance to the next stage.
Advanced
At this point, the only that you can do to improve your speed is by challenging your limits.
Practice serious competitive typing here.
On Monkeytype, there’s an option to switch onn Pace Caret mode. Set it to your desired speed and compete with yourself.
Your speed will definitely sky-rocket. I am still in the advanced stage with avg speed of ~95wpm.
The newsletter has become more like an essay now 😅
Quote of the week
The paradox of teaching entrepreneurship is that such a formula necessarily cannot exist; because every innovation is new and unique, no authority can prescribe in concrete terms how to be innovative. - Peter Theil
Book am reading
Picked up Zero to One. Enjoying what I’ve read till now.
You can access the half-baked notes of what am reading here.
New stuff am learning
Systems thinking - I have been reading a lot and am creating my own systems in Notion. I look at it as a one-time investment of time and energy that will save me a lot of efforts in the future.
Community Management - Community-focused startups are blowing up now and not learning about this is a very stupid move. As more and more founders/influencers realize the importance of a community, the demand for Community managers will rise.
Will share my learnings in some other edition.
If you’ve made it till here, then here take this 🤗
Since this is the first edition of the newsletter, any feedback would be appreciated.
I have never written for an online audience before and hence even am learning on the go.
Talk soon.
Rooting for you.
